It was the turn of Year 5 pupils to leave Mum and Dad at home and head off for an action packed weekend recently, as they enjoyed a residential visit to Winmarleigh Hall.
Setting off on Friday, heading for the unexpected adventures that PGL had waiting for them, the Year 5 pupils were in good spirit. For many, it was the first time that they had been away from home in the company of their classmates and teachers and such an excursion is all part of the growing up process.

As with most new things in life, it is always best to start gently and gain experience before taking on a big challenge. So it seems fitting that the Year 7 girls were rewarded for a season committed to hockey practices and matches, with a weekend tour to East Lancashire. For all of the girls it was the first of what we hope will be many hockey tours at KEQMS maybe culminating in a tour to New Zealand, as the seniors are enjoying this summer. For our young players it certainly was an action packed couple of days!

Why do teams go on tour? For those people not involved in sport this is a question that is often asked. For anyone wanting an answer to the question, the U12 and U13 rugby tour to Newcastle would have answered the question.

As the two squads assembled on Friday they were obviously familiar to each other, but only as schoolmates and fellow players. By the time they arrived back at school on Sunday, they were a ‘band of brothers' who had experienced all the trials and tribulations that a tour presents.

If you were driving past the school at the weekend you will have noticed that the car parks were full for most of the time. It was, of course, because the school was the venue for the Lytham St Annes Festival of Performing Arts.

For anyone who knows their history, the name of Kim Phuc is well known as that of the little girl in the iconic picture from the Vietnam War, taken as she ran screaming from the napalm bombs that had been dropped on her village. Kim now travels the world talking about her experiences and how she came to terms with all her problems. To hear her speak is inspirational.

King Edward and Queen Mary School was honoured today to welcome Kim Phuc to address the Senior and Junior assemblies.

On June 8, 1972, Kim's village of Trang Bang came under attack by South Vietnamese planes, which mistakenly dropped napalm on a Buddhist pagoda in an area where the North Vietnamese were infiltrating. While running for safety with other children, Kim was severely burned by the napalm.

Another full week of sport for the girls saw us compete in three tournaments which started on Tuesday with the Lancashire U14 tournament.

Fourth place in Lancashire is an impressive result for the U14's playing some excellent hockey against the top schools in the County.
Our first game against on form Arnold was a culture shock but we worked very hard and came off with our heads held high despite the scoreline. We lost 0-4 against Kirkham but played out of our skins to record a well deserved draw against Stonyhurst in the final match.

One of the problems that teachers face on a regular basis is continuing to produce a high standard of performance, be it in sport or the arts, with an ever changing supply of talent. It is quite clear that for the KEQMS production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Director Neil Walker has again managed to produce an excellent play, having carefully assessed the ability of his performers and cast them accordingly. The critique, by Toby Stirling of the opening night, explains all.
