Public Benefit
KEQMS is also part of the wider community and I take this opportunity to highlight some of the ways in which the school offers significant public benefit to that community.
• We educate over 600 children at no cost to the state, thereby saving the Exchequer somewhere in excess of £2.5million.
• Our fee level is significantly below the national average.
• The Lytham Schools Foundation operates a means tested bursary scheme offering awards up to full fee remission and giving over £100,000 per year in remission of fees from which children are currently benefiting.
• The Foundation also part funds building maintenance costs for two Foundation primary schools: Heyhouses and Lytham Church of England Schools. In 2010 the Foundation made a £10,000 capital grant and a further £12,500 loan to Lytham C of E School to fund building development at the school.
• We train and induct teachers at no cost to the state.
• We offer placements to universities for student teachers undertaking teaching practice. We also regularly welcome people who are considering a career in teaching to spend days shadowing teachers.
• In 2009 -10 KEQMS offered KS2 Science lessons in our laboratories to local primary schools.
• A number of KEQMS teachers are involved in A level and GSCE examining. The school is an examining centre for the Associated Board of the Royal Society of Music.
• Members of the PE and Games staff coach at national, regional and county levels. A number of KEQMS athletes participate in representative sport at these levels.
• All pupils involved in the Duke of Edinburgh programme have to complete a community service placement course at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. A number help at Rainbows, Brownies and Cubs or nurseries and after school clubs; others coach rugby and hockey in the local area, teach at Sunday school and help at residential camps for handicapped children.
• We provide work experience for pupils in local maintained schools.
• A number of KEQMS musical events were open to the public, such as the performance of the Nelson Mass by the King Edward VII and Queen Mary Singers and the School Choir.
• The Concert Band played at the Lytham Service of Remembrance and the Head Boy and Head Girl read at the Lytham and St Annes Services. The Swing Band performed on Club Day; other groups gave concerts recitals at various local venues, such as Freckleton Methodist Church, Carols at St John's Church and Clifton Hospital, and Education Sunday at Church Road Methodist Church
• Charitable causes supported by the school included Barnados, Help for Heroes, The Kim Phuc Foundation, Hats for Haiti, RNLI, Children in Need and Medequip for Kids.
