KEQMS Scholarships

King Edward VII and Queen Mary School offers a number of Open scholarships and means-tested Foundation scholarships and for academic, musical and sporting promise. They are funded by investment income of the Lytham Schools Charity and awarded at various entry points.

Open Scholarships are awarded for outstanding academic, musical or sporting promise evidenced by performance in the Entrance Exam at 11, and by interview, assessment and school report at 13+ and 16+. They may be awarded to internal candidates at the Principal's discretion at any point in a child's school career. In practice most open scholarships are either honorary or give a small level of fee remission.

Lytham Foundation Scholarships: these are means-tested, competitive awards offering up to 100% fee remission to candidates at 11, 13+, and 16+ who show outstanding promise academically or in music or sport. Foundation scholarships are designed to make it possible for talented pupils, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend the school, to do so. They are awarded at 11 as a result of performance in the Entrance Exam, and at 13+ & 16+ as a result of interview, assessment or school report. Two Lytham Foundation Scholarships are endowed to candidates from Heyhouses Church of England School and Lytham Church of England School, which are part of the Lytham Schools Charity.

To be eligible for means-tested Foundation Scholarships, parents must complete a confidential form to evaluate their financial circumstances.

As part of their personal development, all scholars will be expected to contribute fully to the wider life of the school, including coaching and supporting other pupils or assisting teachers. The school provides an enrichment programme including specialist tuition or coaching, lectures, educational visits and special events so that the scholarship benefits the pupil, not just the parent.

How do you win a scholarship?
Academic scholarships are awarded as a result of the pupil's performance in the Entrance Exam at 11+ or by interview, school report or assessment later in a student's career. Scholarships are retained throughout each year of a pupil's career at the School provided the pupil meets expectations both of good application to his or her studies and good conduct. It is also possible for a pupil to be awarded an academic, music or sports scholarship later in his or her school career in recognition of outstanding contribution.

Are there Music scholarships?
Music scholarships are awarded each year to pupils of musical ability and potential. There is the opportunity to meet the Director of Music who will conduct a short audition. These auditions take place in January before the Entrance Exam for Year 7 or by arrangement for those seeking entry at a later point in their school careers. Further details about music scholarships are available on request from the Registrar, Mrs Hothersall.

Are there Sports scholarships?
Sports Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an assessment before the Entrance Exam for Year 7 and at other times for those seeking entry at a later point in their school career. Evidence of sporting achievement may also be submitted in support of an application for a sports scholarship; please contact the school for further details.

Sixth Form
There are scholarships for promising students in maths, music, modern languages, the medical field and sport.

Bursaries
In accordance with the ancient objects of the charity, the Foundation also funds a small number of means tested bursary awards to enable children who might not otherwise attend the school, or be able to continue attending, to do so.
