Dame Edith Kellett-Bowman (QM 1931-37)

Elaine Kay (above centre) was born in 1924 and educated at Queen Mary School, the Mount School in York and St Anne's College Oxford. She became Elaine Kellet upon her first marriage to a Norfolk farmer, with whom she had four children, and in 1960 the Women's Institute named her as Country Housewife of the Year. Her husband was tragically killed in a car crash and her second marriage was to Edward Bowman, with whom she served both as a Councillor for Camden Borough Council and as a Member of the European Parliament.

She became a barrister in 1964 and was also a member of the Press Council. She served as Conservative MP for Lancaster from 1970 until her retirement in 1997 and she was made a Dame in the Queen's New Years Honours List in 1988.
