Art
2010 produced a promising set of examination results. At AS level a 100% pass rate was achieved at grades A and B, with six A grades out of seven. An art award was given to one student by the Fylde Soroptimists. GCSE also showed a 100% pass rate with three at A* and five A's. A2 also enjoyed a 100% pass rate. A new ‘A' level syllabus (unendorsed) has been introduced and includes Textiles, 3D, Ceramics and other disciplines. The department has provided a new sewing machine and advances in the teaching of ceramics have been made possible by investment in a new kiln, slab roller and extruder. The standard of the students' ceramic work is remarkable after only one year. Displays around the school, using current work and new picture frames, have been well received and positive comments were made during inspection. Clubs at lunchtime and after school have offered support, facilities and help and a greater opportunity for all students to achieve good grades. The end of year exhibition of examination students' work gave family, friends, governors and teachers an opportunity to see the students' final exhibitions and to look at their sketchbooks. It was a great success and much encouragement and positive feedback was received. Art trips to the Liverpool Tate, Manchester City Gallery and Degree Shows at Manchester and Preston were well attended and informative. For the first time, school students' work has been selected for showing in Booth's Gallery in Lytham next April
AIMS
Through the teaching of Art at King Edward VII and Queen Mary School we aim to stimulate interest in and awareness of the expressive and creative potential of art, craft and design: to enable pupils to become visually literate: to use and understand art as a form of tactile communication and to have confidence and competence in evaluating visual images and artefacts.
OBJECTIVES
Pupils will be given opportunities to:
Record responses, including observations of the natural and made environment.
Gather resources and materials, using them to stimulate and develop ideas.
Explore and use two and three dimensional media, working on a variety of scales.
Review and modify their work as it progresses.
Develop understanding of the work of artists, crafts people and designers, applying knowledge to their own work.
Respond to and evaluate art, craft and design, including their own and others' work.
Contribute to the school ethos through shared events such as drama productions, displays of work and links with other schools and countries.
