Learning

We aim to develop independent thinkers with the personal qualities and skills to succeed in a rapidly changing society. From early years to the sixth form, both curriculum and teaching are designed to stimulate young minds, to encourage boys and girls to question and to develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Standards of teaching and learning are high; pupils benefit from small class sizes and teachers who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their subjects. As they progress through the school, they are also encouraged to set personal targets and to take more responsibility for their learning both in and out of the classroom. In addition to regular reports of academic progress, teachers know individual pupils in their classes well and will contact parents if there is reason to praise or cause for concern.

From early years onwards, we give close attention to literacy, numeracy and the development of transferable skills. For example, Information Technology is taught by specialists and also integrated into learning in all subjects. The school's extranet holds numerous online curriculum resources and the libraries are excellent centres for independent reading and research. The Hawkins Library houses over 10,000 titles and is used extensively for private study.

The pupils at KEQMS range from those who are academically very able and win places at top universities to boys and girls who find aspects of learning daunting. Expert support is provided for those with learning needs. Teaching methods cater for different learning styles so that students of all abilities are helped and challenged. We consistently ‘add value' by achieving better results than those predicted by national baseline tests.
