Physics

This year, Mr John Turner retired from the Physics department after many years service to the school. He leaves a department in good shape with a wealth of resources and a carefully planned curriculum. In addition to the Head of Science responsibilities, Mrs Pauline Lenney will take responsibility for the teaching of Physics; this move will promote further integration of the science curriculum and enhance the sharing of good practice.

Thanks to the generosity of the Wolfson Foundation and a very kind donation from Mr Tom Westhall towards an interactive whiteboard, the new Physics laboratory is now completed. It provides an environment that is spacious and modern. Students will be able to follow a highly experimental and interactive approach to the subject.

During this year a number of students have participated in national science and engineering initiatives. Rachel Smith attended a ‘Headstart' course at Newcastle University. Jacob Lloyd was chosen to attend a residential course funded by the ‘National Grid'. He worked as part of a team which addressed questions about global energy issues and participated in problem solving activities to assess alternative fuel initiatives. Katy Lenney was one of only twenty girls to secure a place on the RAF Work Experience Week at RAF Cosford. Following the course, Katy was chosen to represent the RAF on the BBC website ‘Slink'. This year, the science exchange to the Czech Republic and further applications for places on a number of national initiatives will see even more students involved in science and technology outside the classroom.
