Year 10 Mathematics Curriculum Plan
General Information
Number of periods per fortnight: 6
Sets The subject is set by ability, with a larger top set and a smaller bottom set to allow for appropriate progress.
Course Information This is a Modular course with a Higher (A*-D) and a Foundation (C-G) Tier of entry.
Both tiers are structured to cover the following strands: Number, Algebra, Shape & Space, and Data Handling.
There are three Units of Study:
Unit 1 (worth 20% of the GCSE) cover Data Handling alone and is typically taken at the Higher level by all students, with the top set taking it in early March of Year 10 and the rest taking it at the end Year 10.
Unit 2 (30%) covers all other material and is typically taken by all students in March of Year 10, and by most at the Higher level.
Unit 3 (50%), the Terminal Unit, covers the same material as Unit 2 and is taken by all students at the end of Year 11, at the level appropriate to their ability.
Parents and students should be aware that any single Unit can only be retaken once, the better of the two marks counting.
Further to the above course of study, most top set students undertake an AS Module in Decision Mathematics, the course running in Year 11 after the completion of the GCSE Mathematics content.
To study Mathematics in the Sixth Form at KEQMS, we normally require at least an A grade in GCSE Mathematics.
Online Resources
Further to the above, there is a huge variety of maths based websites available for teachers, students and parents. As a department, we tend to use the internet for research and for illustrating the richness and usefulness of mathematics. A very good place to start is here, a site which gives hundreds of links.
Here are a few of my favourites on this site or to go directly, just click on the description:
