Year 12 Drama Curriculum Plan

Overview

The Drama Department follows the AQA course for A-Level Drama & Theatre Studies. The course is taught in 9 lessons per fortnight. Two teachers (NAW & IRC) deliver the course. In choosing texts for coursework and examination, the Department endeavours to engage the students' interest, while making work challenging for the most able, yet accessible to all.

AS Level Drama & Theatre Studies Overview

Unit 1 (DRAM1): Live Theatre Production Seen & Prescribed Play

Students are taken to a range of Theatre productions throughout the course, evaluating, studying and making notes for the examination on their return to school. The intention is to see as broad a range of plays as possible in order to increase the breadth of students theatrical knowledge, but also to make sure that students feel they have a number of plays about which they could write in an exam situation at the end of the AS course.

Text being studied:

Sophocles - Antigone

Antigone to be studied with a sense of directorial overview (in preparation for the requirements of A2) but with an awareness that only the extract specified on the examination paper needs to be covered in the final examination.

To be assessed by 1 hour 30 minute examination at the end of the AS course

Unit 2 (DRAM2): Presentation of an Extract of a Play

Students should produce an extract from a play between 15 and 35 minutes, depending on the size of the group. They must also complete a tri-partite piece of written coursework to accompany the performance.

Texts currently being performed:

Harold Pinter - The Caretaker
Shelagh Stephenson - The Memory of Water

The coursework will be internally assessed but verified by an external moderator on the day of performance.
