Year 12 AS Physics Curriculum Plan
Advancing Physics AS is a contemporary course, developed by the Institute of Physics and examined by the OCR who maintain an information page about this subject.
Assessment is by two written examinations and two pieces of teacher-assessed coursework.
All materials used in lessons and for homework are available to staff and students on the school extranet.
Unit G491 Physics in Action
- Provides a graduated path from GCSE to AS level.
- Focuses on physics in use.
Communication
- Imaging: ideas about information.
- Sensing: simple circuit theory up to the potential divider.
- Signalling: spectra, polarisation and digital signals.
Designer Materials
- Testing Materials: mechanical, optical and electrical properties of materials, giving attention to a wide range of materials in use.
- Looking Inside Materials: explaining the properties of materials in terms of structure at various scales; composites.
Unit G492 Understanding Processes
- Progresses towards new ways of thinking.
- Focuses on curiosity-driven physics.
Waves and Quantum Behaviour
- Wave Behaviour: Young's diffraction experiment and gratings; colour and thin films.
- Quantum Behaviour: photons and evidence of electron diffraction.

Unit G493 Physics in Practice - Coursework
- Quality of Measurement. A report of a measurement or study of a physical relationship, with attention paid to improving the quality of measurement and making valid inferences from data.
- Physics in Use. A presentation on the use, properties and structure of a material.
