Drama is taught as part of the English course.

  • Movement.
  • Mime.
  • Off-text improvisation.
  • On-text improvisation.
  • Hot seating.
  • Internal dramatic monologue.
  • Freeze frame.
  • Dramatising a class reader.
  • Dramatising a poem.
  • Posture, gesture and facial expression.
  • Role play.
  • Introduction to physical theatre.
  • Script writing.

The following are skills specifically addressed in this scheme for Year 7.

Life Skills

Concentration; listening to each other, to instructions, etc.; developing the memory; general alertness and quick responses.

Confidence building: getting used to being watched, talking and acting in front of others.

Learning to work with others, group tolerance, working in different group sizes, building up group sensitivity and awareness of others.

Building up trust of each other, overcoming embarrassment in front of others in many areas including touch.

Problem solving, individually, in pairs and in groups.

The ability to analyse and evaluate.

Enhancing Practical Creativity

Expanding and encouraging the use of the imagination.

Preliminary explorations into character.

An understanding of basic narrative skills.

Structuring stories and structuring drama.

Presentation and Performance Skills

Vocal expression: audibility, clarity, thinking on one's feet, language appropriate to character and situation.

Movement: flexibility and expressiveness, movement appropriate to character and situation.

Acting learning points: picking up cues, stage sense - maintaining visible and audible; control.

Improvisation learning points: beginnings and endings; the importance of the whole stage picture; use of space and levels; focusing on one thing at a time; the importance of structure.

Audience learning points: learning what to look for in a performance; giving respect to other performers - listening and concentrating.
