Year 7 pupils learn how to design and make new food products. You can find out more about how new products are designed for the food industry here.
The emphasis is on learning to cook nutritious meals using plenty of fruits and vegetables. There are many sites offering nutritional advice but one of the most comprehensive and useful at KS3 is that of the British Nutrition Foundation.
Pupils learn how to work hygienically and safely with ingredients and equipment in the food room. Information and advice about current food hygiene issues can be found by looking on the government Food Standards site.
During the final module pupils work towards a bronze or silver food award run jointly by the Design and Technology Association and Sainsbury's 'Active Kids Get Cooking' campaign. Information about these awards can be found either by looking here and following the links, or more directly on the Active Kids Get Cooking web page.
Key skills are learned using a 'hands on' approach and pupils need to be well organized with ingredients, containers and planning sheets for practical lessons. A large, named plastic box is very helpful in preventing confusion and spillages at home time!
