Year 7 Music Curriculum Plan
The department Follows the National Curriculum Guidelines by adopting a scheme which focuses on the three main areas of music:
- Listening & Appraising
- Performing
- Composing
Pupils Study units from the Opus Series, but this is enriched by extra listening exercises (Bell Music), performing (Singing & Keyboards) and ICT composing work
Lesson Structure
As far as possible each lessons is structured with an opening ‘Bell Music' exercise. This is to ensure that the class settles down as quickly as possible with a short piece of listening work. The main Unit work is introduced which may include practical activities (composition/performing). Close with plenary.
- Bell music
- Unit work - introduction
- Unit activities (Listening/Composing/Perfoming/Display Work)
- Plenary
Assessment
Each term pupils are assessed by short interim assessments, and one formal assessment. Interim assessments are usually based upon musical terms, basic theory, keyboard/instrumental performance and factual information from the units studied. Formal testing will encompass a number of these areas in a 30-40minutes formal assessment, usually towards the end of each term. The KS3 Listening Tests (Rhinegold) may also be used to asses unseen Listening and Appraising skills. These also include a section on self-appraisal. The results of these formal assessments are recorded on the schools' database.
Profiles
All pupils complete a yellow profile card which records their musical history whilst at KEQMS. This includes the recoding of music exams which have been taken and concerts they have been involved in both in and out of school.
Opus Series
According to the ability of the class we aim to cover four of the topics from the Opus Series over the year. Some classes may only cover three.
Cover Work
In the absence of a qualified music teacher cover work is available based on the Units. There are also independent topic based cover sheets available and work for extended writing which meets the needs of the English Across the Curriculum Policy.
