Year 7 Physics Curriculum Plan
The course is based on Longman and Company's Exploring Science course, and is taught as four units lasting six or seven weeks each. All students are provided with the course textbook. Students are assessed through a formal test at the end of each unit.
All materials used in lessons and for homework are available to staff and students on the school extranet.
7I Energy and Sustainable Living
Conservation of energy and global problems relating to the effective use of energy resources is of paramount importance to our society and this module introduces pupils to many of these crucial ideas. Areas of study include fossil fuels, green living and green transport, renewable and non-renewable energy resources and food as an energy source.
7J Electrical Circuits
Here, common sense safety with electrical circuits is stressed, along with the dangers of electric shock. A basic idea of current as a flow of electrons is established. Circuit work using bulbs and ammeters is included, along with the concepts of series and parallel circuits and of the working and purpose of fuses.
7K Forces
This unit is an introduction into an understanding of the physical world using Newtonian ideas. Pupils will learn to recognise the forces that occur in the natural world and be able to explain how they may be measured and how they interact with matter. Examples of forces studied include weight, friction and buoyancy. Equilibrium is studied in an elementary manner.
7L The Solar System and Beyond
In this exciting unit, pupils will gain an understanding of the universe around them and their place in it. They will also be able to understand why the Earth has days and seasons as well as the Moon and its phases. Here is an activity that lets you build your own solar system.
