Year 8 Design Technology Plan
Overview
The Year 8 scheme of work has been developed to enable students tofurther their capability in Design and Technology. Students are taughtto recognise and explore needs and wants that can be met through Designand Technology activity, develop ideas about how these might be met anddevelop marketable products that meet those needs. They will developand extend their repertoire of skills and knowledge in the followingareas:
- Designing.
- Making.
- Use of Computer Aided Design.
- Knowledge of mechanisms.
- Knowledge of marketing.
- Working knowledge of materials and components.
- Knowledge of quality and Health and Safety.
- Knowledge of systems and control.
Teaching is based around two different projects.
Project 1. Pull along mechanical toy.
Through this project, the following are developed:
- Understanding of theory of mechanical systems - levers and cams.
- Adopting a methodical approach to problem solving.
- Understanding of
- Research and investigation techniques.
- Evaluation of existing products.
- Production and use of models as a design tool.
- Use of simple manufacturing aids - templates.
- Further use of fabrication techniques applicable to wood based materials.
Project 2. 'Fragrant freebie' (promotional air freshener).
This project, although graphics based, produces a 3D outcome. It develops the following:
- Understanding of marketing through advertising.
- Further use of computer aided design software including importing images, reversal and inversion of text.
- Skills of handling semi compliant materials - cutting/bending.
- Understanding of safe application of heat to change materials from solid to liquid.
- Knowledge of assembly techniques including laminating.
