Year 9 Geography Curriculum Plan
Overview
The text book used is Earthworks Geography Project - Book 3, by John
Widdowson, published by John Murray. (Each student has a copy of this
book.) We also use a section from Earthworks Plus. This is supplemented
by a series of worksheets which can be found in the resources section
and a variety of videos, maps, presentations and other material.
In the autumn term the Geography and Chemistry departments complete a cross-curricular topic on limestone where resources are shared. (Please see links to Year 9 Chemistry.)
Topics Covered
Unit 1 - Geographical Enquiry of Malham, Limestone Scenery and National Parks
The emphasis in this unit is on coursework based on a day long fieldtrip to Malham village and cove in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A useful interactive feature on limestone features in the Dales is available here. The mark for the completed piece of coursework constitutes 25% of the Year 9 examination result.
Unit 2 - Earthquakes and Volcanoes
This unit looks at the patterns and processes associated with earthquakes and volcanoes and the differences in the responses to hazardous events in the LEDW and MEDW.
Unit 3 - Football and Fashion
In this unit, students study the concept of a global industry through the familiar topics of football and fashion. The following link gives information about the new Emirates Stadium and sites about Nike are to be found here and here.
Unit 4 - Development
This unit looks at the range of development that has taken place in different regions within the lesser and more economically developed world and how these affect people who live in these areas. This encourages students to look at the world as global citizens and students are encouraged to consider how their values and attitudes, as well as those of other people, affect contemporary issues.
Assessment
The mark for the completed piece of coursework constitutes 25% of the Year 9 examination result.
At the end of units 2, 3 and 4 the pupils complete a self-assessment and a formal assessment which either takes the form of a written test or a piece of extended writing.
