Sport, outdoor pursuits & international dimensions
KEQMS enjoys superb playing fields, highly qualified and committed games teachers and a tradition of excellence in sport. Boys and girls regularly gain honours at county, regional and national representative levels. Our teams go on tour in the UK, Europe and the Southern Hemisphere. In addition to the major games of rugby, cricket, hockey, netball and athletics, there are opportunities to participate in a wide range of minor sports at school or at intramural level for one of the four Houses.
Outdoor education promotes self-reliance, resilience and teamwork. The school uses a variety of centres in the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and North Wales for residential field courses and popular activities such as fell walking, mountain biking and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. In recent years school expeditions have departed for destinations in the UK, Europe and India.
The international dimension is also enhanced by reciprocal links with schools in France, Germany and the Czech Republic. These links provide regular student exchanges in Modern Languages, Music, Science and Art. KEQMS students have opportunities to meet their European counterparts and to share experiences in an international context.
Creativity and the spiritual dimension
Music plays a vital role at KEQMS. Numerous choirs and ensembles perform challenging and entertaining repertoires ranging from classical music to jazz and rock. Performance adds greatly to self-esteem and personal development, so pupils of all ages and levels of ability are encouraged to participate in the programme of concerts and recitals.
We are very proud of our reputation for excellence in drama and musical theatre. Productions of ‘The Mikado’, ‘Grease’ and ‘The Sound of Music’ and have involved students as performers, technicians or designers. In 2006 the production of ‘Godspell’ went to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2007 students from Years 7 to 13 performed ‘Les Misérables’.
The modern Art and Design Studios are a hive of activity where girls and boys develop their creative and inventive skills by working with a wide range of media and techniques.
Communication through creative activities gives rise to moments that move young peoples’ horizons and extend their understanding. Opportunities to explore the spiritual side of our natures may also occur when climbing a mountain, working with others, or in collective or personal reflection in assembly. There are many opportunities to explore the spiritual side of our natures in the daily programme at KEQMS.
