Religion and Philosophy

On 2nd February GCSE Religion and Philosophy students visited S. Nicholas Church Wrea Green before travelling on to Liverpool's two great cathedrals. The trip was designed to bring context and strengthen the work students have been doing in the classroom as part of their new philosophy unit, considering how and why people worship, and how faith may be inspired, sustained and deepened through sacred space, belonging to a church, devotion in worship and through art.

At Wrea Green students were kindly welcomed by the vicar, the Rev'd Wes Marks, who was most hospitable in inviting us to explore the building and the various artefacts he provided access to. The Rev'd Marks then answered student questions; so taken were all students and staff by the informative, personal and sincere exchanges that we failed to take any pictures!

The pictures we did manage to capture show students exploring Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (Roman Catholic) followed by the Anglican Cathedral. In the Anglican Cathedral we were all treated to a rare organ demonstration on the largest cathedral organ in Europe given by our own Mr Hills and thanks to the kind permission and arrangement of the cathedral's director of music, Mr David Poulter.

We also enjoyed a tour of the tower, passing the full collection of bells on the climb and taking in the magnificent views from the very top - unfortunately the skies were not quite clear enough to see Blackpool tower!
