English Language Years 12 & 13

 Overview

The English Department follows the AQA course for A-Level English Language (Specification B). The course is taught in 9 lessons per fortnight by two teachers (KEB and FW.) The Department endeavours to engage the students' interest, while making work rich and academically challenging for all, yet still accessible for the lessable.

AS Level English Language Overview

Unit 1 (ENGB1): Categorising Texts

Introduction to study of language focusing on Language and Power, Language and Gender and Language and Technology.

To be assessed by 2 hour examination at the end of the AS course

Unit 2 (ENGB2): Creating Texts

Writing in different genres for different audiences and purposes

This unit is assessed by written coursework of 2500 -3000 words. It will be internally marked and moderated and then externally moderated by an AQA assessor.

A2 Level English Language Overview

Unit 3 (ENGB3): Developing Language

Building on AS knowledge, students will study Child language Acquisition and Language Change

To be assessed by a two and half hour written examination in January with the opportunity for retaking at the end of the A2 course.

 

Unit 4 (ENGB4): Investigating Language

Written coursework entailing the creation of a language investigation and an informative media text

To be assessed by two coursework essays of 2500 - 3000 words in total length. The coursework will be internally marked and moderated and then externally moderated by an AQA assessor.

Creating Texts: Unit 2

Writing to Entertain:

• Writing an article
• Introduction to commentaries/process of writing

FW: Categorising Texts: Unit 1

Language frameworks focusing on spoken texts:
• Phonetics and phonology
• Pragmatics
• Discourse
• Conversational analysis

Creating Texts: Unit 2

Writing to Entertain
• Monologues
• Speeches
