Outdoor Pursuits
Outdoor education promotes self-reliance, resilience and teamwork. Helping another person up a mountain or setting up a tent in the wind and rain moves boys and girls out of their comfort zones so that they discover something about themselves and others. The school uses a variety of centres in the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and North Wales for residential field courses and activities such as climbing, caving and mountain biking. The Duke of Edinburgh Award, which adds service, skill and activity sections to the expedition element, attracts large numbers from Bronze to Gold. In recent years school expeditions have departed for destinations in the UK, Europe, India and Africa. Many combine trekking in challenging terrain with a community service project where students live and work with people of different cultures and standards of living.
