On Wednesday, the senior Rugby Sevens Squad travelled to Stonyhurst College to compete in the annual tournament. The opening group match came against Manchester Grammar School. The team created a number of opportunities but were unable to take advantage of all their possession - eventually losing out by only one score 12 - 17. Charlie Cook and Emilio Arciniega were the try scorers.
In the second game, the team faced Giggleswick School. Support play was particularly slow in allowing the offload and at the breakdown in this game. In addition, there were a number of missed tackles which ultimately cost the team dearly - going down 0 - 19. The third group game saw the team come up against Bradford Grammar School. This was most definitely a game of two halves as going into the break the KEQMS side were level at 21 - 21 thanks to tries from Kelham O'Hanlon (2) and Tom Pemberton. However, the opposition showed their class in the second period with 4 further unanswered scores to run out 21 - 49 victors.
The final group game saw the side face local rivals Arnold School - with the winners guaranteed a place in the plate competition, and the losers an early trip home. The team started positively and were soon exerting their dominance on a weak Arnold side. The opposition managed to turn some possession into points but were overwhelmed and outclassed in the end as the KEQMS team ended the game as comfortable winners 33 - 12. Tries came from Kelham O'Hanlon (2), Tom Pemberton, Charlie Cook and Tom Webb. This victory secured a quarter-final tie in the plate competition against St. Ambrose College.
In the qurter-final, the opposition started strongly and were a couple of scores up early on in the game. The side fought back well with opportunist scores from Tom Webb (2) and Kelham O'Hanlon. However, the opposition hung on in the dying seconds to record a narrow 19 - 17 win. The last tournament of the season takes place next Thursday at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens Competition.
On Saturday 13th March the U15 rugby 7's squad travelled over to The Kings School Macclesfield. KEQMS where placed in a tough group with Hymers, Warwick, Wilmslow and Stockport GS.
The team started positively against Hymers showing promise going forward with the ball, especially from William Thompson and James Pugh. However lapses in defence let Hymers through for a couple of soft tries.
As the competition developed so did KEQMS putting in impressive performances against Warwick and Wilmslow.
In the final group game against Stockport GS, excellent defence from Richard Grocott help keep Stockport at bay until the last minutes of the game.
Well done to everyone, a spirited performance from all involved.
