Song for Kim

For anyone who knows their history, the name of Kim Phuc is well known as that of the little girl in the iconic picture from the Vietnam War, taken as she ran screaming from the napalm bombs that had been dropped on her village. Kim now travels the world talking about her experiences and how she came to terms with all her problems. To hear her speak is inspirational.

She is currently on a tour of the North West, which she started here at King Edward and Queen Mary School. To commemorate this occasion one of the music staff, Mr Lyndon Hills, composed a ‘Song for Kim'.

The lyrics were written by Sixth Former Lydia Bower and the song is performed by another Sixth Former Sarah Lenney.
The song is both uplifting and poignant with the basic message that ‘it only takes one to make a difference'. The quality of the record is exceptional in all aspects. The lyrics reflect the emotional journey that Kim has had to make since that fateful day, but show that a lot of good can come out of such a horrendous situation.

The music really captures that journey of Kim, starting in a mellow mood, but at all times showing us glimpses of the soaring melodies to come, as Kim finds what she regards as her purpose in life, to inspire others to search for peace and forgiveness. The music leads us to an uplifting crescendo before gently reminding us again that ‘sometimes all it takes is the bravery of one.' The quality of the youthful voice from Sarah suits the mood perfectly and as the song progresses the tonal control reflects a purity that gives the listener a perfect ending to the emotional journey.
