Chemistry
Chemistry is challenging and interesting. It complements the other sciences but also combines readily with a wide range of Advanced Level subjects. It is highly recommended and often essential for many careers. If you are an enthusiastic student with an interest in science, Chemistry may provide you with a stimulating course of further study.
Although the study of Chemistry at this level is demanding, at KEQMS we endeavour to make the GCSE to A Level transition as smooth as possible. We are aware of the need to develop each student's study skills and confidence. With this in mind, the first few weeks are devoted to fundamental chemical principles. After this the students follow a well-structured course in which they are given the support and encouragement necessary to achieve their potential.
In September 2007 we will be starting the AQA's new course specification for Chemistry for AS and A Level located at: www.aqa.org.uk/
The new drafted specification has been designed to:
• develop a candidate's knowledge and understanding of Chemistry to provide a pathway to further study;
• ensure that learning is enjoyable, and enhances a candidate's enthusiasm for Chemistry;
• ensure relevance to contemporary issues by building on the concepts of ‘How Science Works' that were introduced at GCSE.
How Science Works
‘How Science Works' is an underpinning set of concepts and is the means whereby students come to understand how scientists investigate scientific phenomena in their attempts to explain the world about us. Moreover, ‘How Science Works' recognises the contribution scientists have made to their own disciplines and to the wider world.Further, it recognises that scientists may be influenced by their own beliefs and that these can affect the way in which they approach their work. Also, it acknowledges that scientists can and must contribute to debates about the uses to which their work is put and how their work influences decision-making in society.
