Design and Technology

Course details

Design and Technology (Product Design) is suitable for students who have followed any of the GCSE Design and Technology syllabuses.

Technology is concerned with meeting human needs, applying scientific knowledge and using physical resources to solve practical problems.

The course is designed to enable students to:
* develop innovation, creativity and technological capability;
* produce high quality products;
* apply knowledge and understanding of production processes to a range of
activities;
* develop critical evaluation skills;
* become discerning consumers able to make informed choices.

Assessment details - AS

The AS course consists of two equally weighted modules:

Unit I Coursework - A single design and make major project.

Unit 2 This section develops knowledge and understanding of Product Design.

Assessment details A2

A further two modules can be studied at A2 to make up the full A level.

Unit 3 This module involves development of more extensive knowledge and
understanding of Product Design.

Unit 4 There is a further major project to undertake, concentrating on commercially
viable products.

Connections with other subjects and Post A Level

Design and Technology can be usefully studied in combination with Arts or Science subjects but combines particularly well with Art or Maths and Physics for those looking to Design or Engineering courses at university.
