Drama and Theatre Studies

The Course will comprise four assessment units, combining practical and written coursework and written examination. While GCSE Drama will be useful, it is by no means essential.

The AS course consists of two modules with a further two A2 modules to be studied in the Upper Sixth.

The units will include the development of acting skills (a performance being required for both AS and A2), the study of theatrical genre, period and style and the work of particular theatre practitioners. Students will also study a range of plays during the course and will be required to participate in theatre visits to see a range of productions during the course. Two of the modules will be coursework based.

Skills gained include:

• an appreciation of theatre, its critical demands and the theory behind it;
• an ability to analyse and comment upon a range of theatrical texts and issues and to realise them on stage in performance;
• an ability to produce, direct and perform in a range of dramatic productions as well as the ability to communicate clearly;
• an appreciation of the necessary social skills required when working as part of a group;
• an understanding of the discipline required in the theatrical world.

Connections with other subjects

Drama and Theatre Studies links well with many other subjects at A Level including English Language, English Literature, Sociology, Psychology and even History and Religious Studies because of the issues that arise from the study of texts and contexts and the need for an analytical and systematic approach. In the study of design elements there can often be useful links with Art and Design.

Post A Level

Drama and Theatre Studies is accepted for admission by all universities as a general entry requirement. The course also lends itself to a wide and diverse range of careers not only in the area of theatre, film and television but also in teaching, business and marketing, management and journalism. The analytical and communication skills developed during the course are applicable to most academic disciplines and therefore provide a good foundation for any degree course.

Extra Curricular

It is expected that Drama and Theatre Studies students will actively participate in the various school performances either in an acting, directing or technical capacity. There are annual residential trips to London and Stratford and a range of related activities on offer through the English Society.
