The KEQMS 'Wimbledon' Championship Finals follows the more 'famous' event with the matches being on the school's grass courts with umpires and ball girls but we would have been happy not to have the traditional rain at the start of the mornings play.
Not to dampen spirits , however, the Yr 7 & 8 singles finals started on time and we saw a fantastic standard in the Year 7 match with Nicole Brown just winning 6 - 5 with a marathon final game of many deuces. Excellent serving from Nicole and great groundstrokes from Georgia saw the match ebb and flow with the lead changing hands several times but Nicole eventually won the final game to lift the title. The Year 8 final saw Ellie Webb prove too strong for Alice Smith to take the first of her two trophies.
The doubles events were a reverse of the singles with the Year 8 proving a close affair in which an injury to Alice Smith , when they were 5 - 3 ahead , proved too much of a handicap and Ellie Webb & Beth Holyoak took advantage to win 6 - 5. The Year 7 singles finalists Nicole & Georgia teamed up in the doubles and proved too strong for finalists Emily Grey & Ellen Craggs winning 6 - 0.
The Year 9 finals saw Philippa Wood win two titles after a close game against Kim Kirkham in the singles, she then partnered Kim in the doubles to defeat Holy Quarmby and Rebecca Waite.
The Year 10 saw another double champion, Sophia Crawshay, who capped a great term on the athletics track with wins in both the singles and doubles. After defeating Hannah Youles in the semi-finals Sophia went into the final with confidence and her persistent style of play getting everything back over the net saw her edge to the title against Ruby Lawson. Sophia then teamed up with Rachael Harrison to defeat Ruby and Gabby Newell 6 - 3 after some excellent play from all four players.
The trophies were presented by our tennis coach Lucy Cain whose work with our tennis academies has certainly reaped its rewards with a pleasing standard of play from all our finalists.
