Learning in the classroom
The Preparatory School is housed in a self-contained part of a spectacular new development. It contains eight bright, modern classrooms equipped to the highest standards, together with an ICT suite, library, multi-purpose hall, changing rooms and playground. The playing fields and parents' car park are adjacent.
The broad and diverse Key Stage 2 curriculum continues to emphasise core skills in English, Maths and Science. Specialist teachers, small class sizes and excellent resources ensure that pupils are fully prepared for National Curriculum Key Stage 2 Standardised Attainment Tests and for entrance to the Senior School. At the same time children are encouraged to develop skills of inquiry and independent research. Every pupil has his or her own email account with filtered access to the internet.
Those children who require assistance and encouragement to enable them to reach their full potential are offered specialist help by the Learning Support department.
Parent consultation evenings and regular reports provide parents with detailed information on individual progress, achievements and targets. Open Days give parents further opportunities to view their children's work and to share in their learning.
Learning outside the classroom
The programme of clubs and activities during the week, both at lunchtime and after school, gives each child the opportunity to pursue his or her personal interests in intellectual, creative and aesthetic or physical pursuits.
Specialist coaching and excellent facilities, together with a full fixture list in team games against local primary and independent schools, means that the school enjoys a fine reputation for its sporting successes.
Music and drama are also particularly important in the life of the Preparatory School. The children sing and play a wide variety of instruments in regular concerts and recitals. Many children take speech and drama lessons and the Christmas drama production is a highlight.
The programme of educational visits adds an extra dimension to classroom learning. In particular, older pupils have the opportunity to develop independence and confidence by participating in adventure holidays in this country or in destinations such as France and the Low Countries. The pupils proceed to the Senior School fully prepared for the next stage of their education.
